In 1999, Dr. Hartman-Stein developed the Behavioral Competence Inventory (BCI)©

The BCI is a 106 item caregiver report measure of the breadth of the functional behavioral repertoire of older adults at risk for dementia.

The 106 items are divided into 7 separate sub-scales:

  • Self-Care
  • Instrumental Activities of Daily Living
  • Memory/Orientation
  • Social Interaction
  • Compensates for Incapacities
  • Behavioral Excesses
  • Behavioral Deficits
