Part 1 to 4 (90 minutes each)
Part ONE: Enhance brain health through learning, moving, sleeping and staying calm: Dr. Paula discusses the role of life-long learning, challenging hobbies/pursuits, and why hearing aids enhance cognition. Questions to be addressed: Does early retirement help or hurt? Should I do cross word puzzles daily? Are there apps that can help? How much sleep do I really need? How can I improve my sleep? What kind of exercise/movement should I do? Does walking make a difference? Does controlling stress really matter for brain health? What is an easy to use method of calming down immediately?
Part 2: Enhance brain health through eating well: What habits are the best for brain/heart health? Culinary nutritionist Brigid McVaugh explains eating patterns known as Mediterranean, Nordic, Mind, DASH and very low fat diets endorsed by Dr. Ornish, & Dr. Esselstyn which all promote heart and brain health. But what’s realistic to follow, especially if you don’t like to cook? What about dietary supplements? What small changes in eating can make a real difference. Does weight matter? Dr. Paula "weighs" in about the role of anxiety/stress and tips to reduce it.
Part 3: Enhance brain health through eating "power foods": These foods only work when you incorporate them into your meals and snacks on a regular basis. Ms McVaugh shows examples of what she has in her kitchen and provides practical tips on planning, shopping and preparing meals.
Part 4: "Stay calm and connected" focuses on the role of emotional health and its impact on prevention of dementia and other chronic illnesses. Dr. Paula addresses practical ways of reducing stress & preventing depression through non-pharma methods such as deep breathing exercises, brief meditation used in dementia prevention trials as well as ideas to increase meaning in life post-retirement.
Cost of the 4 part educational series is now reduced to $99 from $135; Click the PayPal link below to register; you will receive separate links to each of the 4 sessions.
Endorsement from a recent participant: "I have used much of the information shared by you and Brigid to make several significant lifestyle changes. I have been more thoughtful with menu selection and food prep with particular attention to reducing sodium and fats. My husband and I have resumed our gym memberships and are working on a walking routine, in a natural environment. I have also registered for a Life-long Learning program at the U of Pgh. Small but meaningful adjustments."
